🇮🇹 Tirreno-Adriatico 2017 – Preview

OVERVIEW

The 52nd Tirreno-Adriatico follows on the Tour of Italy. The Tirreno-Adriatico attracts big names from March 8 to 14 2017, starting from Lido di Camaiore and working its way eastwards to San Benedetto del Tronto. The route from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Adriatic Sea gives the event its nickname, ‘The Race of the Two Seas’, and also explains why the winner receives a replica of Neptune’s trident as a unique trophy. Last year, the event’s key mountain stage with a summit finish in the Apennine Mountains was cancelled due to extreme weather conditions – snow and ice. This effectively prevented the climbers, such as Vincenzo Nibali, from making a dent in the general classification, and the win was taken by Greg Van Avermaet (BMC).

STAGE ONE

FAVOURITES (Stage 1)

The opening TTT, along the coast will be between the usual Team Time Trial contenders BMC, QuickStep and Trek.

MY PREDICTION: BMC Racing🇺🇸

STAGE TWO

FAVOURITES (Stage 2)

A lumpy start to the racing schedule. I think it will come down to the top uphill sprinters such as GVA and Sagan.

MY PREDICTION: Greg Van Avermaet 🇧🇪 (BMC Racing Team)

STAGE THREE

FAVOURITES (Stage 3)

Warm up for Milan-Sanremo. Should be a day for the flat men, with Gaviria in prime position to take the stage.

MY PREDICTION: Fernando Gaviria 🇨🇴  (Quickstep Floors)

STAGE FOUR

FAVOURITES (Stage 4)

The first GC decider is a on stage four with a summit finish. The best climber at the race is undoubtedly Quintana, and he may need to but a decent gap between his GC riders who are better on the TT course (Dumoulin, Dennis, Thomas, Roglic, Spilak)

MY PREDICTION: Nairo Quintana 🇨🇴 (Movistar Team)

STAGE FIVE

FAVOURITES (Stage 5)

Similar to the second stage, another showdown between GVA and Sagan?

MY PREDICTION: Greg Van Avermaet 🇧🇪 (BMC Racing Team)

STAGE SIX

FAVOURITES (Stage 6)

The last sprint before the possible decisive TT on the last stage. I think after a hard week of racing Sagan, will be able to pip the other sprinters on stage six.

MY PREDICTION: Peter Sagan 🇸🇰  (Bora – Hansgrohe)

STAGE SEVEN

FAVOURITES (Stage 7)

A TT just over 10km will se a fight between the specialist, Dumoulin, Dennis and Castroveijo. I think this will all just be about Quintana, defending the time he has over his nearest GC rivals.

MY PREDICTION: Tom Dumoulin 🇳🇱 (Team Sunweb)

OVERALL RACE FAVOURITE

Nairo Quintana 🇨🇴 (Movistar Team)

I think he will build a big enough gap between him and his rivals before the final TT stage. Movistar will provide him with a decent TTT to start out with, probably only being bettered by BMC, Quickstep and Sky. I think his climbing abilities on stage four should give him enough of a gap to defend throughout the rest of the race.

ONES TO WATCH

Tom Dumoulin 🇳🇱 (Team Sunweb)

If Quintana for some reason doesn’t have an almighty lead going into stage seven, it all could be to play for. This will bring in the likes of Dumoulin and Dennis, if they can get within a minute of Quintana on stage four it may keep the general classification alive!

Thibaut Pinot 🇫🇷  (FDJr)

Pinot has been steadily improving his racing against the clock for a year or two now. He is also a better climber than the other TT specialist. If he can keeps relativley close to Quintana on the climb, he may be able to pip him by a few seconds in the TT.

Primož Roglic 🇸🇮  (Team Lotto NL Jumbo)

The Slovenian has been a little bit of a storm in the WT in 2016 and continued that this year. He has a great TT record and could be within a chance of the podium if he can follow any attacks on stage four.
